There are many questions for an actor. ‘Which is the right agent?!’. ‘What’s the right part?’. The truth is that it’s not about the what or the which but the who. Who wants to represent you and who gives you the job. You see the awful crappy truth is that for the most part actors are at the mercy of others. Writers, Directors, Agents, Casting Directors, Producers, all looking for the answer all searching for the one. That someone who can bring a part to life. Give it breath. Tell the story. Without that they are lost. Sometimes that answer is you, sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it’s down to what you do in the audition, sometimes it’s not. But every single time that you are the answer and get the job it’s because you’ve given them what they were looking for. An image. A feeling. A type. An energy. And that starts the minute they clasp eyes on you, long before you get in the room. It starts the minute they look at your photo.
That’s why you have to look like your photo when you walk though the door. It’s what they are hoping and praying for. They don’t want it too flattering. They don’t want it out of date. They want it to get up from the page, grow a pair of legs and walk though the door. Because in that photo they have seen the possibility of an answer. The answer to their prayers. You.
Now here’s the problem . Which ‘you’ should you give in this photo. The Mean you. The Funny you. The Sexy you. Aye, there’s the rub! Can you do all that in one photo?! Well you’d be a better man than I. There is a reason why Spotlight offer the option of posting more than one image on line. So…Is it time to rebrand? Is it time to update? Is it time to get a portfolio?
